WayFinding is a creative practice, designed by Grant Lowe and Deborah Templeton. It evolved as Grant and Deborah explored innovative ways to bring together their rich mix of creative backgrounds and practices in the projects outlined on this website.
The WayFinding practice combines walking trails, art maps, photography, poetry, and creative audio to support participant engagement in environments and specific locations. We work with WayFinding in two ways: as a multi-modal approach to artistic commissions; and as a participatory arts process for communities.

WAYFINDERS
BARNSLEY & PENISTONE - 2024
In September 2024, two groups of local newcomers to Barnsley and Penistone participated in
WAYFINDERS as part of the government's Know Your Neighbourhood scheme.
WAYFINDERS is a creative practice, designed by Grant Lowe and Deborah Templeton, which combines walking trails, artistic maps, photography and text to support participant engagement in their environments.
The groups in Barnsley and Penistone were each introduced to the history of their new town through a specially designed art-map which unlocked some of the local stories. Then, they were invited to creatively map those places for themselves, exploring and deepening their relationship to their new homes through photography, writing, and collaging.
In this film and digital exhibition, participants share their art-maps, their appreciation for Barnsley and Penistone, and their experiences in the WAYFINDERS project.
